Kiva Detroit

Detroit, a City Built on Entrepreneurship Large and Small

Since 2012, Kiva Detroit has helped over 150 Detroit and Metro Detroit borrowers access over $680,000 in Kiva loans. As of 2019 and since becoming a Kiva Hub, Kiva Detroit has also started assisting Kiva borrowers outside Detroit and Metro Detroit in an effort to maximize impact across the state. This expansion has already helped borrowers in Ann Arbor, Lansing, and Grand Blanc access over $20,000 in Kiva loans.

Kiva Detroit is a program that works alongside Build Institute in Southwest Detroit. Build Institute is a super hub of inclusive innovation that catalyzes talent for economic and community development. As a business incubator, Build Institute provides premium business and entrepreneurship courses at accessible rates. Since 2012 Build Institute has held over 127 classes and graduated over 1,700 entrepreneurs. These achievements have created or retained over 2,400 jobs and created or retained over 600 businesses. In addition to business education and capital programs, Build Institute facilitates marketing and networking opportunities.

The Motor City is revving up its engines for small businesses

And we love supporting its entrepreneurs! Below are some examples of entrepreneurs we've supported in the past:

Harriette | Sisters on a Roll Mobile Cafe

Sisters on a Roll Mobile Cafe is a mobile catering food service, proudly owned and operated by Harriette Brown. Harriette has made supporting community events and initiatives as much a part of her business as the delicious and diverse foods she produces!

Herman | Dilla's Delights

Dilla's Delights is owned and operated by Herman Hayes. A downtown Detroit bakery founded, in part, in homage to Herman's late nephew and Legendary Hip Hop producer, J Dilla.

Phillip | KBI Auto

KBI Auto is a Detroit auto repair and maintenance shop that has been serving the community for almost 20 years. Originally founded by Phillip Knight's father, Phillip has operated the establishment for most of it's existence. The shop remains a staple of the Knight family offering employment to family members if ever they are in need!
